Cultural memories connect communities of people over time. “Take Me Home: A Journey through DC’s Queer Places and Sounds of the 80s and 90s” is an intergenerational, multimedia, bilingual experience exploring the impact of the AIDS crisis and LGBTQ+ identity on 1980s and 1990s pop music. This workshop is two-fold: an interactive panel highlighting how music documented queer experiences during the AIDS crisis; and a youth-friendly social mixer that features a curated DJ set of dance songs from the 1980s and 1990s. During the panel, storytelling, archival footage, and music videos will guide a communal conversation about the intersection of DC club culture, queer history, and local responses to the AIDS crisis. In addition, through their own experiences and historical cultural leadership, panelists will provide participants with over five examples of how queer and HIV/AIDS history has and continues to impact the sounds of DC’s dance floors and community-led spaces.
