The Helen Hayes Awards program was launched in 1984 to recognize excellence in and promote awareness of DC theatre. The program’s volunteer panel of judges, who are now required to be trained in bias-awareness, arts criticism, and accountability; attend and promote hundreds of productions annually as part of the Helen Hayes Recommends initiative; and nominate productions and theatre artists for awards in non-gender-specific categories as well as for year-round recognition for excellence and promotion by Theatre Washington. The awards ceremony has grown into the country’s best-known theatre awards ceremony outside of the Tony Awards and is attended by 1500 people. The ceremony will be held on May 19, 2025, at the Anthem at the District Waterfront. It will be a large celebration recognizing the resilience and collaboration of the theatre industry in the region and a celebration of the expansive number of outstanding productions seen on our stages for the 2024 theatre season.
