Throwback Pride Block Party
June 4
1700 block of 20th Street NW
Brought to you by Dupont Circle BID
The Throwback Pride Block Party is happening in Dupont Circle on Wednesday, June 4th! Come celebrate 50 years of Pride in DC at this ‘70s-themed block party as we celebrate the half a century where the Pride “Parade” started on the exact block where it all began.
In 1975, LGBTQ bookstore owner Deacon Maccubbin decided to host the first ever D.C. “Gay Pride Day” outside of his store, Lambda Rising, on 20th Street NW, and 2,000 people came to party.
On June 4, 2025 from 4:00-8:00 p.m., we will celebrate its origins by honoring Deacon Maccubbin and the legacy of Pride in D.C. right where it started, complete with live music, Disco DJ, food, and drinks! Deacon will be the Grand Marshall and will be speaking on the steps of the former Lambda Rising store, the same place where he kicked off Pride 50 years ago!
Local businesses that line 20th Street will be serving up street food and drinks, coupons to retail shops, unique clothes, and even Pride makeovers! There will be live bands playing fun tracks across the block, as well as a live DJ spinning on-theme ‘70s music so we can boogie the night away.
Don’t miss this amazing crossover of Pride celebration and history as we take it all the way back to 1975. Retro outfits encouraged!
